Ice Climbing

A climber ascends and ice covered rock face using crampons and an ice ax.

Ice climbs in City of Rocks form as snow accumulates on the rock, melts, then flows down the granite faces. The runoff freezes at night, over time creating ice that becomes climbable. The world-class rock climbing City of Rocks is famous for transforms into something more challenging. Experienced climbers with crampons, ice picks, and other special gear can climb new routes created by the ice.

Contact the City of Rocks Visitor Center for current ice conditions or for a list of professional guides and outfitters permitted to operate within the park.
