While the largest body of water in Colorado is within Curecanti, there are a variety of ecosystems here besides Blue Mesa Reservoir. Curecanti also hosts riparian habitats, steep canyons, and areas of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and aspen.

A wide range of mammals can be found within Curecanti, including mule deer, mountain lion, black bear, coyote, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, elk and even an occasional moose.
