A small fort with a big story!

Fort Necessity National Battlefield covers the story of the battle of Fort Necessity on July 3, 1754. This battle is the opening battle of the French and Indian War and leads to a world wide conflict that sets the stage for the American Revolution. This fort is the site of George Washington's first military encounter and his only surrender.

We also cover the story of the National Road, which was America's first federally funded highway. Interstate route 40 that you enter the park from is the current version of this historical road. You will have the opportunity to learn about how the road was created, maintained and explore a historic stagecoach stop in Mount Washington Tavern.

 

The Fort Necessity/National Road Interpretive and Education Center features exhibits that immerse visitors in the sites and sounds of 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania.

 

Plan 1 1/2 to 2 hrs to see the historic sites in the main unit of the park, the fort and Mount Washington Tavern. Add another hour to visit Braddock's Grave and Jumonville Glen sites.

Visit Operating Hours & Seasons to find out when visitor facilities are open. The Fort Necessity park grounds are daily from Sunrise - Sunset, year-round.
