Dinnerware
These hand painted Italian dishes are one of the items you would see on a tour of Scotty’s Castle. The crest in the middle with the letters “DVR” stand for Death Valley Ranch, the name the Albert Johnson gave to his vacation home. The initials “J” and “S” stand for Johnson and Scotty. A symbol of the friendship the two men shared. The banner below the crest contains a Latin phrase, Albert Johnson’s personal motto—“By our perseverance we will succeed”. The small plate also features an unusual curled bottom edge. Scotty is accredited with an interesting explanation for the existence of the curl. Scotty said one day he had been washing dishes at the castle. He placed the dishes to dry in the shade which he often claimed was 150 degrees year round. He then became distracted and forgot about the drying dishes. The shade of course moved and the edges of the dishes that got caught in the sun curled up.
