By Frank Newton Hollman
1917

Before airplanes, the only way to get from Los Angeles to Chicago was by land. In 1905, headlines were made across the country when Death Valley Scotty completed the trip by train in 44 hours and 54 minutes. Thousands lined the rail along the route to watch the speeding train go by. This adventure launched Scotty into national stardom.
