The Shoshone were well adapted to Death Valley and knew how to cultivate plants for food, medicine, and tools. The mortar and pestle were used to pound various seeds into a finer mass to be used in cooking. Tthis mortar and pestle may have been used to pound mesquite seed pods into flour meal.
