Bell

Made by G.W. Coffin & Company, Buckeye Bell Foundry, Cincinnati, Ohio

Divers discovered this bell in front of the Cairo's wheelhouse on September 30, 1963. It weighs over 400 lbs. It was originally used as a school or church bell.

Edwin C. Bearss, Vicksburg National Military Park historian, noted "As the bronze bell was being lifted to the surface by 10 husky men, the bell clanged loudly and a bubble of air which had been trapped since the vessel's sinking burst forth." Hardluck Ironclad.
