Perched on top of a mountain, this high-elevation meadow can come as a bit of a surprise after the miles of lush, green forests that make up most of Shenandoah National Park.

While the exact reasons for its existence remain unclear, Big Meadows provides essential habitat for many plants and animals, as well as opportunities for visitors to view wildlife, stargaze, or to simply wander the many paths that weave throughout this unique ecosystem. Located near the center of the Park, Big Meadows also provides a convenient place to base your Shenandoah adventure. There are many services just a short walk or drive away:
