Visitor Impacts

Shenandoah National Park is working with utility partners to make repairs and upgrade infrastructure in an effort to proactively mitigate damage from future weather events. Work has begun to replace utility poles and repair power lines along two utility corridors in the park. The work will impact visitor services at Elkwallow, Mathews Arm Campground, and the Big Meadows area.

In the Big Meadows area:

  • Through the month of April, power outages are occurring intermittently between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
  • Showers are closed 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
  • All Park operations are normal Fridays through Sundays.
  • Wood and ice sales are available at Big Meadows Wayside until further notice.
  • Big Meadows Campground comfort stations/bathrooms (in the loops) remain fully operational.
  • Big Meadows Wayside and the visitor center at Big Meadows are on generators and mostly able to proceed as normal. Between 8:00 a.m and 5:00 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, there may be some Wi-Fi disruption, exhibits have to be closed, and no movies can be shown.
  • Big Meadows Lodge will open as planned on Wednesday, April 24.

Elkwallow Wayside & Mathews Arm Campground:

  • Work will begin for these areas once the work at Big Meadows is completed.
  • There are delayed openings for these facilities. Opening dates are to be determined.
  • If you have a campground reservation between now and mid-June and have not been contacted about your reservation at Mathews Arm, please contact Mindy Bogue: mindy_bogue@nps.gov or 540-999-3500 x3405.
    • You may request to move your camping location to either Big Meadows or Loft Mountain Campgrounds. Availability may be limited in those campgrounds due to the Mathews Arm closure.
    • Or, you may request a refund for your reservation if you wish to cancel.
