Appomattox Court House National Historic Park, the site of the April 9, 1865 surrender that led to the end of the Civil War, became a unit of the National Park Service in 1933. Since that time, development and preservation of the cultural landscape has been guided by planning documents, including a 2009 Cultural Landscape Report. This documents the landscape history, conditions, and recommended preservation treatment for the historically significant features of the site to guide its current and and future management.

Preservation Assistance
The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) is a National Park Service program that promotes the preservation of battlefields and sites of armed conflict beyond our park borders. Through different grant programs, ABPP assists preservation partners at the state, Tribal and local level in their efforts to preserve, interpret and educate about these important places. ABPP focuses primarily on land use, cultural resource and site management planning, and public education.
