KING SALMON, Alaska --- You are invited to review and provide input on the Alaska Region Coastal Park Units Fire Management Plan Environmental Assessment by July 21, 2024.  This plan addresses fire planning in five national park units including Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve. The plan reduces the risk of wildfire to communities, provides park managers with direction and guidance related to wildland fire activities, maintains the integrity of park ecosystems, and allows parks to meet the most current agency and federal policies.

Three alternatives are proposed in the environmental assessment.  The “no action” alternative allows for a continuation of current conditions.  Alternative 2 establishes defensible space in designated areas using mechanical and prescribed fire treatments, adopts a range of wildfire response strategies dependent on geographical area, and meets agency policy within five coastal Alaska park units.  Alternative 3 expands fuels treatments at other park sites in Alaska outside of Aniakchak.

The plan is open for review and comment from June 20 through July 21, 2024 at the National Park Service website at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/AKR_FMP_EA Comments may also be mailed or hand-delivered to: Superintendent, Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve, 1000 Silver St. Building 603, P.O. Box 7, King Salmon, AK 99613. Comments submitted by phone or email will not be accepted.

Please be aware that your entire comment, including personal identifying information such as your address, phone number, and email address, may be made publicly available at any time. While you can ask us in your comment to withhold your personal identifying information from public review, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.
