Notes: His Quechan (or Yuma) name was Olleycotequiebe. According to Padre Font, however, because of his friendship with the mayordomo of Caborca, Don Felipe de la Palma, he took the surname of Palma as his own. Also, according to Font, Sebastián Tarabal gave him the name of “Salvador” when he passed through the Yuma country on his flight from California to Altar. And, of course, he was given the name of “Carlos” in honor of King Carlos III of Spain, and “Antonio” in honor of Antonio María Bucareli y Ursua, Viceroy of New Spain, when he was baptized in the cathedral in Mexico. These last two name were given to him by Padre Echeverria at his baptism. He was known as "Capitán Palma" (Chief Palma) to the Spaniards on the frontier. |
