Notes: At the time of her baptism she was recorded as a "daughter of gentile parents of an unknown tribe." There is no mention of her being a Nijora. Her record is placed under the title seacrh of Nijoras, however, to show that captive Indian children of an unknown tribe were not called Nijoras. That designation was reserved for Yuma-speaking tribes along the Colorado River. Little four-year-old Fautstina Jesús did not qualify as a Nijora because she was purchased at the Cubo Ranchería near Caborca and sold later to Padre Gonzalez without anyone knowing where she was from. Yet she was treated in the same manner as any Nijora, Apache, Seri or other captive child. Like so many others, she was given to the care of Magdalena Nieblina to raise and educate. |
