Notes: He rose through ranks over some twenty-seven years in the “Regimento de Dragones de México” from “cadete” to “alférez” to “teniente” and finally was made “capitán” of the regiment. Finally, in 1769, as the regiment’s senior captain, because of his great “zeal, honor, and luster,” in the execution of his duties, especially the expulsion of the Jesuits from the five colleges of Puebla, in which he commanded the forces in the arrest in two of the colleges, he was promoted to “teniente coronel.” After the arrest, he conducted eighty seven of the Jesuits from Puebla to Xalapa de la Feria over the course of a forty-eight hour march. Not only was he promoted in rank for his service to the King, but he was also given the governorship of “la Colonia de Nuevo Santander.”
