Father Friar Juaquín Velarde
In the year of the Lord, 1781, on the 5th day of March at the home of Don Antonio de Castro, a resident among the merchants of this royal mining camp of San Ildefonso de la Ciénega, Reverend Father Friar Juaquín Velarde, Apostolic Missionary of the College of Santa Cruz de Querétaro and Minister of the Mission of San Xavier del Bac, returned his soul to God, and I provided a church burial for the body on the Gospel side of the sanctuary in the church on the 6th day of the said month. He came to this mining camp to cure himself but I know that it aggravated the disease. He received all the Holy Sacraments of Penitence, Eucarist, and Extreme Unction. The entire population of merchants attended his funeral which was conducted by the Lord Superintendent Priest and Ecclesiastical Judge Don Joseph Nicolás de Mesa. The entire procedure was solemnized in certification of which I sign on the said day, month and year as above.
