African American Civil Rights Network

The Clemson Area African American Museum (CAAAM), in Clemson, South Carolina, is a leading cultural institution in the city and the only museum in Pickens County, South Carolina devoted to African American history. The museum is in the former Calhoun Colored School, which served African American elementary school students in Clemson between 1949 and the 1970s. CAAAM focuses on how Africans and their descendants shaped upstate South Carolina and the rural South. The museum houses an archival collection of books, documents, artifacts, other cultural objects, and oral histories related to African American life in upstate South Carolina. Additionally, the museum features semi-permanent historical, fine art, and pop-up exhibits and sponsors workshops, performances, talks, celebrations, and other public programming.

Clemson Area African American Museum became a part of the African American Civil Rights Network in 2024.

The African American Civil Rights Network recognizes the African American Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the sacrifices made by those who fought against discrimination and segregation. Created by the African American Civil Rights Act of 2017, and coordinated by the National Park Service, the Network tells the stories of the people, places, and events of the U.S. African American Civil Rights Movement through a collection of public and private resources to include properties, facilities, and programs.
