The Army of Tennessee was established in October 1862, with Grant as its first commander. It included units in West Tennessee, Northern Mississippi, and parts of Kentucky. After Grant, the Army of Tennessee was commanded in turn by William T. Sherman, James McPherson, John Logan, and O.O. Howard. The Army of Tennessee plated a central role in the defeat of the Confederate armies in the Western Theater of the Civil War.This is an army flag, so the regulations for regimental flags do not apply. Rather, most higher formation flags were the result of the commander’s personal taste. These flags become mora than just a marker as the war progressed. Though the use of colors and symbols, they became unique to subunits within the formation. For example, a corps within the Army of Tennessee had the “40 Rounds” and cartridge box design, but a different color arrangement. This was the headquarters flag, so it incorporated all colors.
