The 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry was organized at Indianapolis on August 31, 1861. Attached to the 5th Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of Tennessee, the 11th Indiana’s first major action took place at forts Henry and Donelson. The regiment also fought under Grant at Shiloh and fought in the battles at Corinth and Vicksburg. After service in Louisiana, the regiment became a veteran unit and was transferred North. The 11th Indiana fought the remainder of the war, from August 1864 on, as part of the 2nd Brigade, Army of the Shenandoah. This regiment suffered 288 killed by all causes. This flag is nonstandard in that the regiment’s name is painted one red stripe below where it should be. Note also that the stars on the canton are white instead of gold, which was also a less common characteristic. This flag has no battle honors.
