It saw fighting through to the siege of Vicksburg. As part of the 3rd Brigade, 6th Division, 17th Corps, Department of Tennessee, the 15th Iowa, now a veteran volunteer regiment made of reenlisting soldiers, fought from the battle of Kennesaw Mountain to Atlanta, and then to Savannah as part of Sherman’s March to the Sea. It ended the war in North Carolina with the surrender of Johnston’s Confederate army. The 15th Iowa was mustered out of service, suffering 387 deaths from battle and disease. This flag is an example of nonregulation design. The name of the regiment is painted on the blue canton, rather than on the center red stripe as mandated. Also, this flag does not have battle honors.
