The 16th Wisconsin was organized at Madison, Wisconsin in January 1862. It saw action that April at the Battle of Shiloh, as part of the 1st Brigade, 6th Division, Army of the Tennessee, commanded by Grant. The 16th Wisconsin continued fighting in Grant’s Mississippi campaign, culminating with the Siege of Vicksburg. It became a veteran division in early 1864, and was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 17th Corps of the Department of Tennessee. The regiment fought in the battles around Atlanta and took part in the March to the Sea. The 16th Wisconsin ended the war in North Carolina and was mustered out of service on July 12, 1865. During its service, the 16th lost 399 men to combat and disease.This flag is an example of the official design according to army regulations.
