The 50th Illinois was organized in Quincy on September 12, 1861. As part of the Army of Tennessee, it participated in the capture of forts Donelson and Henry. It also fought at Shiloh and in Grant’s Central Mississippi campaign until detached to duty in West Tennessee. A veteran division after January 1864, the 50th Illinois was part of the March to the Sea, ending the war under Sherman’s command, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 15th Corps. One-hundred and ninety-one men of the 50th Illinois were lost during the war. The flag of the 50th Illinois follows exactly the Army regulations for flags. Note the absence of battle honors.
