Croquet Set

The English game of croquet first became widely popular in the late 19th century. Hampton’s lawns near the mansion were ideally suited for playing. The photo dating c. 1897 shows Captain John Ridgely (1851-1938) in the foreground playing croquet with his brother Otho Ridgely (left) and an unidentified friend. The croquet set from the museum collection probably dates from the 1920s, when it would have been enjoyed by Capt. John’s grandchildren.
