The 72nd Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry was established at Fremont, Ohio in late 1861. The regiment's first battle was at Shiloh, under Grant, as part of the 4th Brigade, 5th Division, Army of Tennessee. The 72nd Ohio continued to serve under Grant through the siege and capture of Vicksburg, then as part of the District of Memphis in anti-guerilla duties, until moved to Nashville at the end of 1864. Now a veteran division, the 72nd Ohio helped repulse the Confederates at the Battle of Nashville. It ended the war pursuing Confederate forces in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama, as part of the Department of the Mississippi. The 72nd Ohio lost 298 men to disease and combat and was mustered out of service September 11, 1865. This regimental flag conforms exactly to Army regulations.
