The 7th Iowa was organized at Burlington, Iowa in July of 1861. It was immediately assigned to Grant’s command, as part of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Division, District of Cairo. The regiment fought at forts Henry and Donelson, and at Shiloh. It then fought in the battles around Corinth and became a veteran regiment in 1864. The 7th Iowa was then assigned to the Dept. of Tennessee, 15th Corps, 4th Division, 1st Brigade, in time for the Atlanta campaign and the March to the Sea. It then fought in the Carolinas until the surrender of Johnston and the end of the war. The 7th Iowa lost 305 soldiers and officers from all causes in four years of service.
The 7th Iowa flag is a textbook representation of Union infantry regiment flags.
