Route 66: How to Preserve your Roadbed

The spine of the Route 66 corridor is the roadbed itself. Preserving the original pavement, cross-section, curves, shoulders, culverts, curbs, gutters, and other features are important for maintaining the character and feel of the historic travel experience. The old road also tells us important stories about the evolution of transportation technology through time.

When changes are proposed for historic segments of highway, it is important for the public to work with transportation officials and state historic preservation offices to carefully evaluate both the historic qualities and demonstrated safety needs of each situation. Preservation and safety needs can often be met through flexible, context sensitive design solutions.
