From looking to serve to finding yourself in the history - Bill's Volunteering with the NPS story

NPS
"Then I discovered my 5th Generation GGF served in the Calvert County Militia 31st Regiment and then came to Baltimore under MG Samuel Smith."
Bill is one of our enthusiastic and knowledgable volunteers. Bill was inspired to help the NPS and learn something new along the way. He discovered that his family history coincides with the history and stories that go into the War of 1812. He told us all about how he found the place that gave him exactly what he was looking for. We invited him to share his perspectives on the park:
Why did you start volunteering for the site?
I was looking for a way to give back and learn something in the process. What does the NPS mission mean to you?
The mission of the NPS thru it's Rangers is to protect historical resources made available for the education of the American people and people from all over the world , I am proud to be part of this endeavor.
Do you see yourself in the stories at the site?
Well not at first but it seeped in and then I discovered my 5th Generation GGF served in the Calvert County Militia 31st Regiment and then came to Baltimore under MG Samuel Smith.
Why do you think people should volunteer for the National Park Service?
The Parks are an inspiration in so many ways and when it becomes more personal it's a great feeling not only of pride but developing friends who you may not have met otherwise.
What has been your most enjoyable experience volunteering for the National Park Service?
I really have too many over the years to mention but sharing the knowledge I have acquired and to share with visitors either in Visitor Services or as a Sailor of 1812 in the Chesapeake Bay Flotilla on the Water Battery is very fulfilling.
