Different Road, Different Ride

Rule the Ridge is a motorcycle safety campaign initiated by the Blue Ridge Parkway. This project is partnered with the WASO Office of Risk Management and is funded by the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration. The Blue Ridge Parkway has one of the highest number of motorcycle crash injuries and fatalities in the NPS. This campaign aims to educate riders, change visitor behaviors, improve road safety, and reduce crashes for a safer parkway experience.

Safety Messaging

At BLRI we’re a "different road, different ride”. Visitors need to understand that the Parkway is designed differently than other roads they may be used to. Narrow and soft shoulders, long sweeping curves, and tight curves present unique challenges to riders. This campaign empowers riders to take ownership of their ride; preparation, gear, traffic laws, and giving full time and attention to operate their motorcycle. Key messaging includes the following:
  • Ride in single file. Traveling in a group? Remember to ride single file on the Parkway and maintain safe following distance to provide better reaction times.
  • Keep your eyes on the road. Keep your focus on navigating the route. Take advantage of the many overlooks along the way to stop and enjoy the view safely. Watch for the many hazards you may encounter and practice safe, defensive driving on the Parkway.
  • Ride in center lane of position #2. The Parkway's design features narrow curves, limited sight distances, and unforgiving shoulders. The center position offers the safest path for optimal maneuverability.
