Illuminating the Past

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is a beacon of history and maritime heritage at Cabrillo National Monument. Perched atop the Point Loma Peninsula, this iconic structure offers visitors a glimpse into the past, showcasing the lives of the lightkeepers and the evolution of coastal navigation.

Built in 1855, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse was one of the first eight lighthouses on the West Coast. It guided mariners safely into San Diego Bay for 36 years until 1891, when it was decommissioned due to frequent fog and low clouds obscuring the light. Although a new lighthouse was constructed closer to the water's edge, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse remains a beloved historical landmark.

Self-Guided Tour

Explore the Old Point Loma Lighthouse on a self-guided tour to experience what life was like for the lightkeepers in the 1880s. The restored lighthouse features authentic period furnishings and exhibits that provide insight into the daily routines and challenges faced by those who maintained the beacon.

• Main Level: Discover the living quarters, including the kitchen, dining room, and bedrooms, all furnished to reflect the 1880s period.
• Grounds: Wander around the lighthouse grounds and enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay.

Interactive Exhibits

Adjacent to the lighthouse, the reconstructed assistant keeper's quarters house the "Lighthouses of Point Loma" exhibit. This interactive display tells the stories of the lightkeepers and their families, highlighting their dedication and resilience.

Audio Tour

Enhance your visit with an audio tour available on the NPS app. This guided experience provides detailed narration about the history of the lighthouse, the lives of the lightkeepers, and the maritime heritage of the area.

Lighthouse Keeper Program

For a more immersive experience, join the Lighthouse Keeper Program. This educational activity allows participants to step into the shoes of a 19th-century lightkeeper, performing tasks such as lighting the lantern and maintaining the grounds.

Open Tower Days

On special occasions, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse tower is open to visitors. This unique opportunity allows you to climb the narrow staircase to the top, enjoy an up-close view of the Fresnel lens, and take in panoramic vistas of the surrounding area. Open Tower Days are scheduled periodically throughout the year. Check the Cabrillo National Monument website or contact the Visitor Center for the latest information on upcoming Open Tower Days.

• Admission: Included with the park admission fee
• Accessibility: The lighthouse grounds and first floor are accessible to visitors with mobility impairments. However, the tower is not wheelchair accessible due to the narrow staircase.

• Parking: Available at the main lot near the Visitor Center. From there, it is a short walk to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, with clear directional signs throughout the park.
