National Seashore Rangers Hosting Nature and History Programs in March

WELLFLEET, Mass– Cape Cod National Seashore rangers are offering a variety of programs in March focused on Outer Cape history and natural resources. Programs are free, and no reservations are required. 

Crabs of the Cape—Saturdays at 2 pm, 30 minutes. Small things can have large impacts. Crabs play important roles in the ecosystem. Join a ranger for an indoor illustrated program at the Salt Pond Visitor Center Auditorium to explore how crabs have and continue to create change here.  

Nauset Marsh Hike: Shaping the Cape—Sundays at 11 am, 90 minutes. Walk through Cape Cod’s geologic past on this Nauset Marsh Trail hike. Explore how the Cape has been shaped by nature and people, and what may be in store for its future. Meet at Salt Pond Visitor Center. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. The walk will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain.  The Story of the Pirate Ship Whydah—Sundays, March 13 and 27 at 2 pm, 45 minutes, ¼-mile walk. Delve into the fascinating history of the famous pirate ship, Whydah, which wrecked here in 1717, and its captain, Black Sam Bellamy. Meet at the Marconi Station Site parking lot, off Route 6 in South Wellfleet. Dress for the weather. The walk will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain.  

The Creation of Cape Cod National Seashore—Sunday, March 20 at 2 pm, one hour. In 1961 the Berkshire Eagle of Pittsfield, MA editorialized that the establishment of Cape Cod National Seashore was “the finest victory ever recorded for the cause of conservation in New England.” Join a ranger for an indoor program at Salt Pond Visitor Center that explores the concept and events surrounding the seashore’s establishment. 

If You Go: Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at 50 Nauset Road, Eastham. The center is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Rangers are on duty to assist with trip planning. The America’s National Parks store has seashore-related items for sale. Take in a park film (open captions and audio description available), tour the museum, and enjoy expansive views of Salt Pond, Nauset Marsh, and the Atlantic beyond. Large print and Braille versions of certain publications are available. The Buttonbush and Nauset Marsh walking trails and the Nauset Bicycle Trail are located nearby.
