WELLFLEET, Mass.– As the park winds down from the busy summer visitation season, Cape Cod National Seashore plans to begin or restart several infrastructure projects aimed at improving visitor safety and park infrastructure. Projects include the creation of a new Province Lands Bike Trail connection at Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown, paving improvements throughout the Marconi area in Wellfleet, and the remobilization of demolition work throughout the park. Work crews are expected mobilize on-site in late-September.

Province Lands Bike Trail Spur at Herring Cove Beach
In Provincetown, the park is creating a new bike path spur that will parallel the end of Route 6 where the divided lanes come together and turn right into Herring Cove North parking area via Province Lands Road. The project includes creating a standard 10-foot width for a multi-use trail, centerline striping, improving drainage in low areas to eliminate pooling of water after rainfall, and installing directional and safety signage. The goal of the project is to improve the bike path connections between the park and Provincetown, which sees high visitor-use in the peak summer season. Work is expected to begin in early October and conclude by mid-November. There may be minor, intermittent delays in the vicinity of the work area as necessary.

Repaving Marconi Area Roads
In Wellfleet, the roads around the Marconi Wireless Site, Marconi Beach, and park headquarters will be repaved, resurfaced, and restriped to improve visitor access to these popular sites. Work is expected to begin in early October and conclude by mid-November. There may be minor, intermittent delays in the vicinity of the work area as necessary.

Great American Outdoors Act Demolition Project
Finally, the park is restarting demolition work on the 44 non-historic derelict structures that began this past spring. Work was paused over the summer to accommodate increased summer visitation. The project is funded through the Great American Outdoors Act, created in 2020 through bipartisan legislation to improve infrastructure and expand recreation opportunities in national park and public lands. Work is expected to restart in late-September and continue through spring 2024.
