On March 23, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will begin the process of preserving the pavement at the Oregon Inlet boat ramp parking lot as part of its pavement preservation project at Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore). During this phase of the project, the parking lot and public boat ramps will be closed for three-to-five days.

The Oregon Inlet boat ramp parking lot will receive a three-quarter inch layer of asphalt pavement overlay on top of the existing pavement. The asphalt overlay will protect and lengthen the life of the existing pavement.

While the boat ramps are closed, Cape Hatteras National Seashore recommends boaters use the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s Washington Baum Bridge Boating Access Area, located at the west end of the Washington Baum Bridge in Manteo, NC. The reopening of the Oregon Inlet boat ramp parking lot will be announced on the Seashore’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

In April 2019, the FHWA began a project to preserve approximately 43 miles of paved roads and parking areas within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial. The contractor for the $6.9 million project is Bryant’s Land & Development Industries, Inc. from Burnsville, North Carolina.
