160th Anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga Living History & Youth Programs

Living historian presentations provide a unique opportunity for visitors and volunteers to experience the Battle of Chickamauga and its aftermath.

All programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather or staffing availability.

Living History Programs

Remembering Those Days with George Snodgrass

  • Location: Snodgrass Cabin - Tour Stop 8 (Please follow the Special Program Signs)
  • Program Times: 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm (Saturday); 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, and 2:30 pm (Sunday)

During the Civil War, many families lost their homes and farms, engulfed by terrible battles. Families on Chickamauga battlefield felt this type of loss as well. For the Snodgrass family, the fighting drove them from their home on Sept 19, 1863. Visit Tour Stop 8 and listen to the incredible 45-minute story of how the Snodgrasses weathered the storm of battle and its aftermath from one of the family members -- George Washington Snodgrass.

Slamming the Door: The Repulse of Breckinridge’s Division in Kelly Field

  • Location: Battleline Road
  • Program Times: 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm (Saturday); 10 am (Sunday)

Confederate General John C. Breckinridge’s assault came close to turning US General George Thomas’ flank on the morning of September 20, 1863. The fighting there quickly turned into a soldiers' fight and one that would haunt the memories of its participants in the years to come, leading up to the national military park’s establishment. This special living history program will look at some of the scenes that played out in this action 160 years ago through a short, guided hike to some of the moments of that action.

Youth Programs

Location: Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center
On Saturday, September 16, and on Sunday, September 17, pick up a special Junior Ranger activity for young people to earn a unique Junior Ranger badge available during the battle anniversary. Once completed, just bring the booklet to the visitor center.
