161st Anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga Living History & Youth Programs

Living historian presentations provide a unique opportunity for visitors and volunteers to experience the Battle of Chickamauga and its aftermath.

All programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather or staffing availability.

Living History Programs

Living History and Youth Programs will take place on Saturday, September 14 and on Sunday, September 15.

Remembering Those Days with George Snodgrass

  • Program Times: 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm
  • Location: Snodgrass Cabin (follow the "Special Program" signs)

During the Civil War, many families lost their homes and farms, engulfed by terrible battles. Families on Chickamauga battlefield felt this type of loss as well. For the Snodgrass family, the fighting drove them from their home on Sept 19, 1863. Visit Tour Stop 8 and listen to the incredible 30-minute story of how the Snodgrasses weathered the storm of battle and its aftermath from one of the family members -- George Washington Snodgrass.

"A million of them if there was a hundred...": The 4th US Artillery in the Defense of Horseshoe Ridge

  • Program Times: 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm
  • Location: Horseshoe Ridge (follow the "Special Program" signs)

As Confederate forces assaulted Horseshoe Ridge, on the afternoon of September 20, scores fell on the slopes of Snodgrass Hill, and Battery I, 4th US Artillery contributed to this slaughter. Despite mounting losses, the men continued to work their guns in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Join park rangers and volunteers for an artillery firing demonstration and to hear the tale of the 4th US Artillery's action on Horseshoe Ridge. Follow the special program signs to the demonstration area.

Youth Programs

  • Location: Pick up booklets inside the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center

Stop by the visitor center and pick up a special Junior Ranger activity to earn a unique Junior Ranger badge available during the battle anniversary. Once completed, just bring the booklet back to the visitor center.
