Yoga Hike

Combining art, movement, and meditation, a yoga hike is an easy way to connect in National Parks and with nature around you! Slow yourself down with a reflective hike at the C&O Canal National Historical Park. Benefits from walking the C&O Canal are endless! From improving your physical and mental well-being, boundless photo opportunities, and a great way to spend an afternoon biking in a National Historical Park.
 

Directions

Using the Canal as a scenic backdrop and the towpath as your guide to peace, this activity can be done along any part of the 184.5 miles of the C&O Canal and is an easy level walk geared towards those who want a slower, meditative experience. Be prepared for your hike: 1) Dress for the weather 2) Bring water 3) Make sure you are prepared to #RecreateResponsibly

 
  1. Choose a trail or section path along the C&O Canal towpath. This activity can be modified for short or long distances, depending on preference.
  2. Make sure to stretch prior to starting your hike.
  3. Hike with a gentle pace that is comfortable and allows for appreciation of the scenic views along the C&O Canal.
  4. Set your watch or phone timer to 5 minutes. Hike along the towpath for 5 minutes.
  5. Every time the timer goes off, do a standing yoga pose or deep breathing meditative exercise for 60 seconds.
  6. Take deep breaths, relax your body, and try to clear your thoughts as you move through each pose.
  7. Repeat at least 4 more times, or until the end of your hike.
  8. At the end of your hike, take 1 minute to say to yourself or out loud to your group what you are thankful for or something you are looking forward to.
