Phelan's Company, Alabama Light Artillery

Fowler's-Phelan's Battery was formed in January, 1862, at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with men from the 5th Alabama Regiment. It was stationed at Mobile for about a year, then moved to Tennessee. The unit was assigned to C.Swett's, W.H. Fowler's, M.Smith's, and L.Hoxton's Battalion, and fought with the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville. Later it was transferred back to Mobile and attached to J.T.Gee's command, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The battery reported 10 killed and 18 wounded at Chickamauga, had 6 killed and 9 wounded at Missionary Ridge, and 8 killed and wounded at Nashville. It was organized with 130 officers and men, and surrendered on May 4, 1865, with the same number. Captains William H. Fowler and John Pheland were its commanders.
