Smith, Melancton

- There are few records of Smith's service, with the exception of his leadership in the Battle of Albemarle Sound. On May 5, 1864, Smith commanded nine gunboats in an attack on a Confederate ram, CSS Albemarle, at the mouth of the Roanoke River. The results of the battle were rather inconclusive.
