- There are few records to distinguish the service of James W. Cooke, with the exception of his service in the battle of Albemarle Sound. On May 5, 1864, Commander Cooke, in command of the CSS Albemarle, fought off seven blockading Union ships to a draw at the mouth of the Roanoke River.
