- At the battle of Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862, Lieutenant Worden served in command of the Union ironclad Monitor, against the CSS Virginia, in the first engagement of ironclads in history. The two ships fought each other to a standstill, but the CSS Virginia retired from the battle.
