4. Inspect your gutters and downspouts frequently, and clean them:
A. Every time it rains.
That's doing it precisely backwards! What you can do, however, is check to be sure the gutters and downspouts are working properly, if you're around when it's raining. If there is no water--or only a slight trickle coming out of the downspouts--it's already too late. You are clogged. This is the recommended maintenance approach: Check your gutter and downspout connections monthly. Then, at a minimum, clean them at least twice a year--late Spring and late Fall. This may vary depending upon the number of trees growing near the house. But, by all means, clean as often as it takes to keep them clear of debris. The rain should flow freely from the roof into the gutters, drop through the downspouts, and be carried safely away from your foundation walls through appropriate grading!
