Yes, this is a good approach. Windows needing repair may exhibit weathered or cracked paint, missing glazing putty, cracked and missing glass, sagging upper sash, or one-hinged shutters. But don't despair if you can't repair them all at once. And don't replace them because these various symptoms are indicative of repair-level solutions! Here are some specific tasks that you, or a qualified contractor, should set out to do. 1. Inspect the window unit to see if water is entering around the edges of the frame. If so, caulk the joints or seams. 2. Check the glazing putty for cracked, loose, or missing sections. Also inspect the back putty on the interior side of the pane. 3. Be sure the sill slopes away from the house so water can drain off. 4. Scrape and paint the windows, assuming the wood sash is in sound condition. 5. Check all the operational parts of the window to be sure it open and closes as smoothly as possible.
