Mountain Weather

At 7:00 am this morning, Gabby reported that skies were obscured at the Kahiltna Basecamp (7K), witih snow falling.  Temps were 24 F.  Conditions were similarly cloudy at 14K, and high camp had 20 to 25 mph winds and a cloud cap on the summit.

Weather station telemetry data from 7K and 14K are transmitted hourly to the MesoWest website, including temperatures, wind speed, wind direction, snowfall, and solar radiation.

MountainWeather.com compiles a Denali Weather page, complete with links to the MesoWest data, the NWS Denali Climbing Forecasts, as well as links to FAA webcams.

The National Weather Service publishes their mountain-specific forecast here: Denali Climbing Forecast

Search and Rescue

Heavy search and rescue activity on Denali this week, as is not uncommon the busiest week of the season.  As of blog posting time (2:45 pm Thursday, May 30), two members of three-person expedition remain bivied at the Football Field; rescue teams are waiting for winds to subside.  More info.  Additionally, rangers have responded to frostbite patients, a knee injury, and an ankle injury.

Ranger Reports

14K Patrol #2 (Davis) and 14K Patrol #3 (Oken)  With multiple responses in the past few days, Patrols #2 and #3 have mixed and matched. A combination of patrol members are staged at 17K with Ranger Alan Davis, ready to respond to the incident at the Football Field when winds calm. Ranger Chrissie Oken and two VIPs will head up to 17K soon.

14K Patrol #4 (Bomba) Ranger Bomba's patrol reached 14,200-foot camp yesterday afternoon, taking over SAR communications upon arrival when Chrissie and crew assisted with a lowering of a non-ambulatory climber from the fixed lines.

7K Patrol #3 (Mock)  Though much of the incident activity is focused at higher elevations, 7K patrol members have been busy providing SAR-critical communications, weather observations, and assisting with staging and re-fueling when possible.

Denali Rescue Volunteers

The annual Denali Rescue Volunteers fundraiser, a collaboration with the Denali Arts Council, will be held on June 8. This year, DRV and DAC presents the Vanccouver International Mountain Film Festival at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar in downtown Talkeetna.  DRV Board President Steve Mock has even wrangled his talented brother 'Doc Mock' to provide live musical entertainment during the event.  For more information and tickets, go to the DAC events webpage.
