Job Title: Backcountry Maintenance Assistant
Location: Backcountry locations throughout the park
Project Duration: Ongoing Hours Per Week: Flexible, Sun-Sat Hours Per Month: Flexible
Description of Duties: Everglades National Park encompasses 1.5 million acres of wilderness. Much of this area is open water and is accessible only by boat. Help visitors have a safe and enjoyable backcountry experience by maintaining channel markers, buoys, backcountry campsites and chickees, replacing signs and boundary markers, patrolling waterways and monitoring trails, providing park presence in backcountry areas, monitoring endangered species, and assisting with search and rescue operations.
Benefits: Volunteers will spend their days working outside in beautiful southern Florida. In addition, volunteers will be able to explore many areas of the park, both on foot and by boat.
Goal/Outcome of Position: To provide a safe and enjoyable backcountry experience for visitors. To assist park staff in protecting park resources.
Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired: Have some basic maintenance and backcountry skills. Have knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, park natural and cultural resources. Be able to remain calm during occasional emergency situations.
