HOMESTEAD, Fla. - This month, Everglades National Park celebrates its 70th anniversary.
At Everglades National Park’s dedication, on December 6, 1947, President Harry S. Truman gave a moving depiction of this distinctive national treasure:
"Here are no lofty peaks seeking the sky, no mighty glaciers or rushing streams wearing away the uplifted land. Here is land, tranquil in its quiet beauty, serving not as the source of water, but as the last receiver of it. To its natural abundance we owe the spectacular plant and animal life that distinguishes this place from all others in our country."
The celebration continues on Sunday, December 17, at 2:00 pm, when the park and Artists in Residence in Everglades Inc. (AIRIE) invite all to enjoy an outdoor piano performance and painting demonstration by AIRIE Fellows. This public program, part of AIRIE’s Sundays in the Park series, will be held on the Great Lawn at the Royal Palm Visitor Center within Everglades National Park. December is always an especially beautiful time to enjoy the park – and the cake and concert stand to only make the experience sweeter.
