Buzz Holmstrom was a pioneer of running the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. He was the first to float all the way from Green River, Wyoming to Boulder Dam (Hoover Dam) solo. Upon arrival, he was photographed at the Boulder City boat landing.

St. Thomas was founded in 1865 by Mormon settlers. Preliminary studies projected that the town of St. Thomas would be flooded by Lake Mead and residents were told that they would have to relocate.

The Hualapai Lodge (later renamed Lake Mead Lodge) was the first hotel on Lake Mead and one of the first visitor facilities constructed within the recreation area. It was built in Boulder Beach where it was easily accessible to visitors and close to the lakeshore.

At one time, Overton Beach was one of the most popular spots for visitors to park their RVs, picnic and enjoy the other recreational opportunities in the park. Facilities such as this bath house were constructed to improve the visitors' experience.

As the only marina on the lake in Arizona, Temple Bar offered a less crowded place to recreate. Visitors could stay in these small rustic cabins and enjoy fishing where the Colorado River flows from the Grand Canyon.

This boat dock at Overton Beach was a popular launch site for visitors. The Overton Beach area offered sandy coves and beaches that could only be accessed by boat. Concessioners offered supplies and rentals.

This transmission tower was built at the park's warehouse to supply power to the boat dock at Hemenway Harbor. The warehouse was originally built for storage by the Six Companies, Inc. Katherine Landing Ranger Station

The Katherine Gold Mine was discovered in 1900 and operated intermittently until 1930. The mine and the later, the surrounding area, was named for the sister of one of the discoverers. Katherine Landing district rangers worked out of this station.

Below Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam), the steep walls of Black Canyon provided a sheltered area to fish, camp or boat. The canyon walls kept many of the coves shaded and cool during the summer as well. This dock and store at Willow Beach provided a launch site and a place to get supplies for boaters.

Willow Beach Fish Hatchery

Fishing has always been a favorite activity on the lakes and it quickly became evident to the park service that fish populations would need to be managed in order to keep up with the high volume of fishing. In 1959, the Willow Beach Fish Hatchery was established and dedicated in 1962. The cold water downstream from the dam was ideal for raising rainbow trout.

Steam Powered Tractor

In the late 1700s, Spaniards searched for gold along the Colorado River. They named their camp "Eldorado" in honor of their quest for the legendary city of gold. This steam powered tractor was used in later mining operations in Eldorado Canyon.

The sandy beaches of Katherine Landing were a big attraction. It was also a place to launch a boat to access other beaches and coves on Lake Mohave. It was a favorite destination for visitors from California and Arizona.

Steamboats such as the "Searchlight" operated on the Colorado River from its mouth up to the Virgin River. The shallow draft of the steamers was found to be the most economical way to ship goods along the river before the advent of railroads.

Preliminary studies projected that the town of S. Thomas would be flooded by Lake Mead and residents were told that they would have to relocate. One of the last residents to leave was Hugh Lord, who paddled away from his home when the water lapped at his front door.

Before the Davis Dam was completed, Lake Mohave's water rose significantly at Emery's Landing (also known as Nelson's Landing). Emery's fishing camp in the Eldorado Canyon was situated between Willow Beach and the Davis Dam and was a popular destination.

Eldorado Canyon is located between Willow Beach and Cottonwood Cove. It offers secluded and sheltered coves for fishing and has always been a popular destination. During the 1950s, cabins such as these could be rented by visitors wishing to spend the night. There were also residences.

This mill was located in Eldorado Canyon. In the late 1700s, Spaniards searched for gold along the Colorado River. They named their camp "Eldorado" in honor of the legendary city of gold. At one time, thousands of men, driven by gold fever, lived within the narrow confines of the canyon. This was more men than in the nearby town of Las Vegas.

Pearce Ferry (shown here) was started in 1863 by Jacob Hamblin, bought by Pearce in 1876 who operated it until 1891. This area became popular again during the Grand Canyon-Boulder Dam (Hoover Dam) tours in the 1940's. A concession maintained a floating dock, supply depot, and a dining room.

Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam) was constructed when the Great Depression was in full swing. Tens of thousands of hopeful workers flocked to the dam site with their families and lived in wooden cabins, tattered tents and cardboard dwellings such as this one in a place known as "Ragtown." These makeshift structures provided little shelter from the devastating July heat, the swirling dust and the freezing nights of winter.

The Ancestral Pueblo people grew corn, beans and squash along the Virgin and Muddy rivers. The combination of these three foods provided much of their nutritional needs. They practiced their agriculture on mesa tops and also along river banks that would seasonally flood and water the crops.

This ball of unfired clay and silica was most likely being stored for later use to make pottery. Various tempers were used in the Lake Mead area to hold the clay together while it was being fired. The type of temper used was often dependent on the availability of the resources. Examples of temper used in the Lake Mead area includes sand, crushed rock (olivine, andesite, and limestone), and crushed pottery sherds.

In the 1930s, many states began to charge a sales tax. This often led to the total cost coming down to fractions of a cent. In order to prevent either the retailer or the customer from profiting by rounding up or down, tax coins were introduced. The practice of using sales tax coins died out in the 1950's.

Rugose Coral Caryophyllia Ambrosia

Unlike most corals, Caryophyllia ambrosia does not live in colonies. Rather, it lives a solitary life, attaching to the ocean floor and filter feeding to obtain nutrients. This specimen was found from the Toroweap Formation which is early Permian in age (about 275 million years ago) and was collected by Edward Schenk in 1936, from a site just north of Frenchman Mountain.

This specimen of the trilobite Glossopleura mckeei is encased in plaster. A trilobite is a small carnivorous ocean creature that scuttled along the ocean floor. This specimen was collected by 1940 in the area of Rampart Cave in the Grand Canyon. It was collected by Edward Schenk from the middle Cambrian age (515 million years ago) Bright Angel.

This cephalopod is an orthoceratid (straight-shelled) nautiloid, and was a benthic carnivore - similar to a modern day squid, but with a shell. This is a skull fragment from an early amphibian known as a metoposaur, which would have looked similar to a very large salamander. It is from the late Triassic Chinle Formation and lived around 213 million years ago. It was collected by Edward Schenk in 1938 from a location west of Lake Mead NRA.

Trilobite Glossopleura Mckeei

This rock contains many fragmented segments of the trilobite Glossopleura mckeei. Trilobites were carnivorous creatures that scuttled along the ocean floor and resembled large roly-poly bugs. This specimen was found in the Bright Angel Shale which is middle Cambrian in age (515 million years ago).

This fossil is currently unidentified and may be a new species of ammonite. Ammonites were similar to squid or nautiloids and live in coiled shells. This specimen was found in the Pakoon Limestone which is Pennsylvanian in age (323-300 million years ago), from a site northwest of Lake Mead NRA.

These tracks are identified as Chelichnus, and were made by an early mammal-like reptile that scampered across a sand dune environment. These tracks were made in the early Permian (280-275 million years ago), and this specimen was collected from the Coconino Sandstone between Lake Mead and the Grand Canyon.

Corals

Three genera of coral are preserved in this block: Zaphrentities, Michelinia, and Favosites. These corals would have been part of an ancient reef complex that existed in southern Nevada 350 million years ago when the area was covered by an ocean.

Bryzoan

These bryozoans are very small to microscopic filter feeders that lived in a colony - in a manner similar to coral. This fan-like specimen is called a fenestrate bryozoan and would have been part of an ancient reef complex that existed in southern Nevada 350 million years ago when the area was covered by an ocean.

Petrified Wood

This small piece of petrified wood comes from the late Triassic age (213 million years ago) Chinle Formation. This specimen was found at Lake Mead NRA and is from the same formation that preserves the giant logs of petrified wood seen at Petrified Forest National Park.

Palm Roots

This specimen of chert contains preserved elements of silica-replaced palm roots.

Snail

This is a cast of a high-spired snail. During the fossilization process, sediment (including fragmented elements of smaller ocean organisms) filled the void within the shell and preserved the cast of the snail as well as the small fossil fragments within the sediment.

Bird Tracks

These tracks were collected from the Early Miocene age (17-14 million years ago) Horse Spring Formation, Thumb Member, from a site within Lake Mead NRA. The tracks were left by a wading or shore bird as it walked across the wet sand along the shore of a freshwater lake.

Concretion

This small nodule of chalcedony is an example of a concretion, which forms when layers of mud, sediment, or minerals collect around a small object, such as a stick or bone. The break pattern indicates that this concretion was broken open by a human, possibly a miner interested in finding valuable minerals or an Indigenous person creating a tool.

Horse Jaw

This mandible comes from a species of ancient horse known as Equussimplicidens, also called the Hagerman's Horse. It was slightly smaller than a modern horse, and lived during the Pliocene (3.5 million years ago). This specimen was found in Lake Mead NRA.

Columbian Mammoth Humerus

This leg bone of a Columbian mammoth was collected from river alluvium deposits from the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, by UNLV professor Steve Rowland in 1983. The Columbian Mammoth lived in North America between 1.5 million and 12,000 years ago.

Columbian Mammoth Tusk

This Columbian mammoth tusk was collected in 1991 from a site north of Echo Bay by a crew from Northern Arizona University. This piece of a tusk is still in the plaster jacket in which it was collected to protect the fossil. The crew also collected rib and other mammoth bone fragments at the same site.
