The Hoovers in China
Among the foreigners besieged in Tianjin during the Boxer Rebellion were Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover. Mrs. Hoover wrote to a friend, "You missed one of the opportunities of your life by not coming to China... the most interesting siege of the age."
