From the beginning of World War I, Hoover organized and directed the American Citizen’s Relief Committee that helped 120,000 Americans stranded in Europe return to America. The Hoovers also organized and directed the Commission for Relief in Belgium (CRB). The Commission sold Belgium lace, using the proceeds to provide food to millions of people.
