The people with whom Herbert Hoover had contact spanned a wide-range of backgrounds, interests, ages and beliefs.

[Image] Charles Lindbergh came to Rapidan to discuss air mail service with President Hoover.

The folks who called Madison County, VA home became neighbors of the President. The Hoovers often purchased items for Camp from them.

[Image] “Hoover Day” in Madison County brought the community together with their neighbors, the Hoovers.

Political dignitaries, family, friends, public heroes and even Scouts visited Rapidan Camp.

They came to play and work, to leave the city and refresh in the cool mountain air, to enjoy life and relax, in the midst of very difficult times.

[Image] Hoover invited British Prime Minister Ramsay Macdonald to Rapidan to discuss naval disarmament.

Even when business became the norm at Camp, there was always time to enjoy the sociability of shared meals and the rejuvenation brought by the simple, peaceful setting.

President Hoover needed Rapidan, and the people who joined him there returned to their respective cities refreshed, as well.

Both President and Mrs. Hoover touched the lives of millions of people through their generous public service.
