Flight 93 National Memorial will honor the 40 passengers and crew members on the 23rd observance on Wednesday, Sept. 11, with the 30-minute Moment of Remembrance. The 9:45 a.m. ceremony includes the reading of names and a moment of silence.

The National Park Service and the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial are continuing ‘Teach to Remember 9/11,’ a virtual education program, which will include the Moment of Remembrance. Classrooms can join the ceremony via livestream. Afterward, classes can join live question and answer sessions with park rangers. Educators can register for the virtual event now.

“We are grateful for our partnership with the Friends of Flight 93 to make ‘Teach to Remember 9/11’ possible,” said Flight 93 National Memorial Superintendent Stephen M. Clark. “It is our duty to preserve this special place as both a memorial and a classroom for our children so they too may understand that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.”

“It is our hope that, by honoring the passengers and crew members, future generations may act with the same courage and determination to face their challenges,” said Executive Director Donna Gibson of Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial. “We welcome classrooms across America to join us to learn during ‘Teach to Remember 9/11.’”

A wreath-laying and gate-closing ceremony will take place near the Wall of Names on the Memorial Plaza.

The memorial will open at 7:00 a.m. Visitors are encouraged to arrive one hour before the Observance to allow ample time to park and walk to the event site.

On the morning of Sept. 11, all visitors will park in designated lots and walk to and from the event site. Visitors are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear. The ceremony will be held in a field and will require walking on mown grass and uneven ground.

Accessible buses will be available to accommodate wheelchairs. Standing room and ADA seating will be available for the public.

The Visitor Center will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 11. All programming is free and open to the public.

Programs will be held rain or shine. In severe weather, the program time and location are subject to change. For more information on the observance, including weather updates, prohibited items and group information, please visit https://www.nps.gov/flni/planyourvisit/september-11-observance-general-information.htm.

The observance will be broadcast live to the public on the Flight 93 National Memorial YouTube page. Media are encouraged to take advantage of the live stream or request credentials to attend the event in person.

National Day of Learning – Teach to Remember 9/11

The National Park Service and Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial are coordinating a National Day of Learning, Teach to Remember 9/11 and a National Writing Project, Write to Remember. These will begin on Sept. 11, 2024. This education programming coincides with the annual observance at the memorial. Teachers can register now for this virtual learning opportunity.

These educational sessions will be available for educators through Fall 2024 and include videos with family members of Flight 93 passengers and crew, a virtual tour of the memorial, an opportunity for students to conduct their own investigation of what happened on Flight 93 and live question and answer sessions with park rangers. Students can write about what they learned as part of a 9/11 National Writing Project through Fall 2024.

About Flight 93 National Memorial

On September 24, 2002, Congress passed the Flight 93 National Memorial Act. The Act created a new national park unit to commemorate the passengers and crew of Flight 93 who, on Sept. 11, 2001, courageously gave their lives, thereby thwarting a planned attack on our nation's capital. The memorial is outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where Flight 93 crashed with the loss of its 40 passengers and crew.
