Rome, NY — Summer has arrived, the children are out of school, and people from around the world are visiting Fort Stanwix National Monument. Fort Stanwix released its July 2008 program and events calendar today. The park’s special event calendar has steadily expanded since the fort’s opening in 1976. This summer’s highlight will be the partnership between the National Park Service at Fort Stanwix and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation at the Oriskany Battlefield and Steuben Memorial State Historic Sites. July 4th-Honoring or Nation’s Heroes – Tomb of Unknown Soldier. The staff at Fort Stanwix joins Rome’s annual event to honor our nation’s heroes at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Liberty and James Streets, 9 a.m.
July 4th-Public Readings of the Declaration of Independence – Fort Stanwix. Join the park staff for the annual public reading of the Declaration of Independence, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
July 4th-Holiday Concert and Fireworks. Come enjoy the music of the Rome Community Concert Band on the west lawn of Fort Stanwix; the concert concludes with the City of Rome’s fireworks, Concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
July 5th-Irreversible Decisions, The Legacy of Oriskany – Oriskany Battlefield. These programs explore the impacts of the decisions made at Oriskany that forever changed the lives of families within the Mohawk Valley, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 7th-Evening Open House – Fort Stanwix. The Marinus Willett Center and the Fort will be open for early evening visitation and tours, 6 to 8 p.m. July 10th and 11th-Erie Canal Bike Ride – Fort Stanwix. Bicyclists from around the world will be camping on the fort’s west lawn. Join park staff in welcoming the bicyclists and enjoy the various activities, Events begin at 5 p.m. July 21st-Evening Open House – Steuben Memorial. The Steuben Memorial State Historic Site will be open for early evening visitation and tours, 6 to 8 p.m. July 26th-Honor America Day Parade and Syracuse Symphony Concert – Fort Stanwix. Start the day by watching the city's 25th annual parade, led by the soldiers and ladies of the fort! This evening, bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy a concert played by the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. A grand illumination concludes the concert as cannons, muskets, and fireworks accompany the Overture 1812 and Stars and Stripes Forever. Event activities begin at 7:00 p.m., Rain Date is July 27th
Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the park is free.
