Mystery Artifact Answer #4

Late 1800s fire hydrant standing amid fort ruins. An embossed metal base sits close to the ground, while a metal pole extends upward twice the length of the base.
This mystery artifact is the base for a fire hydrant. The hydrant would have looked something like this photo. When indoor plumbing was added to the fort in the mid-1880s, the army installed fire hydrants at the company barracks. There was one hydrant at each of the two barracks. Fire suppression was an important consideration in the fort's water supply.
